good news and bad news

I have good news and bad news. The good news is I got a gel manicure today -- love! Regular nail polish will last me about 2 days waiting tables. Gel polish lasts 2 weeks or more! It dries hard yet it's flexible so it doesn't chip, and it doesn't damage your nails like acrylic. It's pretty much everything I want in a manicure.

Moving away from that little trip to girly-girl town, I would like to (yet again) express my extreme dissatisfaction with college administrative workers (what are they called?)(this part is the "bad news")(I both love and overuse parentheses).

In 2004 Rutgers University set me back about $30k and sent me out into the job deficient real world with my B.A. in journalism. After a while I began feeling not only penniless and discouraged but also a little depressed. The scary and unforgiving world forced me to refocus my goals and turn my attention toward the bursting-with-jobs health care field.

So I'm in the process of throwing more cash at schools with employees who still don't appreciate me or my money.

Since phone calls were getting me nowhere in the way of information about CCPs (Community College of Philadelphia's) dental hygiene program, I thought going in person would do the trick. As I approached one of the information offices on 17th and Spring Garden I was both excited and optimistic. Silly me. The following conversation actually took place.

Silly Me: "Excuse me, I was wondering if you could help me make an appointment to take the Allied Health Exam."

Old Disgruntled Unappreciative Waste of Space (They actually lovingly call her ODUWOS for short): "Did you apply to the dental hygiene or nursing school yet?"

Silly Me: "No, not yet."

ODUWOS: (annoyed voice) "Well you need to apply to a school."

Silly Me: "Oh...Ok. So how do I go about doing that?"

ODUWOS: "I ain't got nothin to do with that-that's Allied Health."

Silly Me: "I'm sorry, what?"

ODUWOS: "The Allied Health Department."

I was so thankful for her thorough explanation. Wouldn't you be? I am about to be a new student at this school lady (oops I mean ODUWOS). Not only that but I am about to spend thousands of dollars on a degree here and you have made a bad impression on me, probably severely misrepresented this school and put me in a bad mood all at once.

After getting lost in a maze of hallways and getting directed to the wrong rooms three times I was just about to throw in the towel when I found the Allied Health counselor. She was able to give me all of the information I needed. Finally someone with some knowledge and common courtesy!

And I thought I was through dealing with bad-mannered college administrators when I graduated from Rutgers. Sheesh.

  1. I'm not in Allied Health at the College but I am very sorry you had such a bad experience. I promise to help you find what you need and get you in touch with people who will talk to you! (Your blog came up because I have an alert for CCP)
